Cafe Java (American)

A North Austin staple since 1996, Cafe Java is the kind of neighborhood spot where regulars are known by name and treated like family. Longtime team member Vikki Edwards and current owner Chris Fletes (who purchased the restaurant with his family about three years ago) have continued the tradition of warm hospitality and generous portions that keep people coming back—sometimes multiple times a day.

With a big menu and daily-changing specials, Cafe Java is famous for the Java Special, fluffy pancakes in rotating flavors, hearty omelettes, and their crowd-favorite chicken fried chicken. Portions are large, coffee cups stay full, and the service is what truly sets them apart. As Vikki puts it, “we know you by name and we treat you like family.”

That family spirit shows up in real ways. When Vikki’s son left for basic training, customers sent him 150 cards, and over the years all of her kids have worked at the restaurant at some point. The place has grown up alongside its regulars—Vikki even shares the same birthday as the original Cafe Java.

Exciting things are ahead: a new Cedar Park location is on the way, the Round Rock café is marking its 21st birthday with confetti pancakes and funfetti cocktails, and the original location will celebrate 30 years this January. As Vikki says, “don’t forget it because it’s my birthday too.”
